Anna Maria

Year of arrival to the UK: 2006

Motivation: help out her sister with childcare

Education: higher, studied Geography at Gdańsk University

History of employment upon arrival: worked with children (babysitter, mother’s help)

Current occupation: temporarily unemployed, finishing 5 professional development courses

Close friends: Poles

Family status: a several year old daughter born in the UK, and a new partner who is Polish and lives in Kraków

Housing situation: rents a 3-room apartment

Advantages from living in the UK:
“I am content that my daughter is growing up here, because she learns English splendidly. Besides that, she meets different cultures and tastes.”
“I learned to function in a multi-lingual and a culturally diverse environment.”
“For parents with children up to the age of five education is free of charge. People are extremely motivated to return to work and there is a whole array of supporting institutions.”

Disadvantages:

“There is always this feeling of alienation, that you are never really at home.”
“Sometimes it is necessary to suppress ones emotions.”
“I miss the typical family life and nature, which you cannot really fully experience here, when living practically in central London.”

Future plans:
return to Poland, move in together with her partner
